What was it about?
The requirements were extremely varied.
The three residential units were all about comfort, efficiency, safety and operational reliability.
In the stud area, it had to be ensured that the water supply for the horses was guaranteed at all times. Nothing should freeze, even in winter. Warning messages via push notifications had to be possible. Voice control was a must.
The monitoring of all consumption values was desired and the integration of the PV system with backup power supply and later generator.
Which systems were used?
The entire infrastructure for electricity, water and heating had to be planned and created from scratch. In addition to the obvious complexity in the energy and operating areas, this also allowed an efficient infrastructure to be set up from the outset.
KNX proved to be the ideal basic technology due to its high reliability and enormous flexibility. On this basis, the other systems were connected and sensibly combined via Symcon in order to act as a single unit and seamlessly integrate even otherwise completely different systems.
For the 16 KNX meters (electricity, heat, propane gas), the choice fell on Lingg&Janke, as importance was attached to calibrated meters from established meter manufacturers. In addition, an implementation using KNX Data Secure was mandatory, also in view of the EU cybersecurity requirements that will apply from 2027. Symcon is connected via KNX IP Secure as well, so that end-to-end encryption of the building automation is ensured.
What were the challenges?
A central challenge was the enormous variety of systems and data as well as the reliable monitoring of the operationally critical installations.
The stud farm with its training area, the three residential units and the trace heating of the water pipes leading to the drinking troughs has a considerable energy requirement. The aim was therefore to identify suitable levers in order to make the best possible use of the available energy while at the same time ensuring a high level of operational reliability.
The design and integration of the solar system including battery storage was carried out by Wangari Smart Integration Ltd. Elektro Frank GmbH from Mainleus was responsible for the electrical installation and ongoing operation.
How is Symcon used?
The IPSview visualization on Symcon is the first port of call for all operating or warning scenarios. This is where all the data comes together, can be seen in context and correlations become recognizable.
The overview in Symcon and the totality of the recorded operating values allow very good usability. Optimization potential is identified and leveraged. Many values are also monitored for plausibility and updating. This means that emerging problems are known at an early stage and can be solved. A very important point for the many horses is the uninterrupted water supply. A number of faults can occur here that need to be detected quickly. A good example are the alarms if no water is drawn off for a long time or if water is drawn off for too long. A series of warning messages are implemented in the visualization interface via push messages and notifications.
The voice operation of every desired function of the object helps to avoid having to find a switch first or when you have your hands full and busy anyway.

Conclusion
The use of Symcon has made the multitude of requirements and their control possible in the first place. Today, energy is controlled on the basis of generation and demand. Adjustments can be made during operation via the Symcon energy management system (EMS).
The comprehensive monitoring and evaluation of the many energy values from the meters has already allowed faults to be found in the heating system on several occasions. Despite its complexity, the operation can act efficiently and with a considerable reduction in risks, a lot can be achieved with manageable resources. Even in the first year of operation, a more than significant saving in energy costs was achieved while at the same time considerably increasing overall availability.
