What was it about?

102 apartment owners of the Hübeli residential complex in Emmen, Canton Lucerne, joined forces to realise one of the largest privately initiated photovoltaic installations in Central Switzerland. A total of 2,500 square metres of solar panels were installed across the roofs of twelve apartment buildings. The goal was to maximise self-consumption within the shared self-consumption scheme (ZEV) and to give all residents access to affordable solar electricity.

Which systems were used?

The PV installation with around 2,500 m² of panel area was commissioned at the end of March 2024 – just 13 months after the project started. The system stores the surplus electricity in several distributed battery storage systems. The storage, EV charging stations, and heat pumps are integrated into the self-consumption optimisation; additionally, the storage is actively used for peak shaving. Through the ZEV, all 102 parties benefit from cheaper solar tariffs and the lowest possible demand rates. In the stairwells, tablets inform the residents in real time about the current production as well as the status.

How was Symcon used?

Symcon serves as the central energy management system (EMS) for the entire residential complex – spanning all buildings and installations. The platform coordinates energy feed-in and consumption across all twelve properties, manages self-consumption optimisation for EV charging stations and heat pumps, peak shaving, and provides real-time data to residents via the Symcon App and the stairwell tablets. Through the Energy Manager, owners can align their consumption with peak solar production hours.

Conclusion

"Hübelisolar" impressively demonstrates what collective action can achieve: 102 parties realised one of the largest privately initiated PV installations in Central Switzerland in just 13 months, saving nearly 42 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Symcon connects all buildings and systems as the energy management platform, making the solar tariff tangible for every resident – whether baking a cake, drying laundry, or charging an electric car.
